Some things move into a new month because they belong there.

An order is still in progress. A customer has agreed a later date. A project has work scheduled for November.

Other things move forward because nobody has decided what to do with them.

An invoice is waiting to be sent. A difficult customer conversation has been postponed. A staff member still needs an answer about who can approve a routine request. The month changes; the uncertainty travels with it.

At month-end, it is easy to focus on what can be counted. Sales, expenses and payments deserve that attention. It is also useful to look at the commitments that have not yet become a clear action.

What is waiting on a decision? What has been promised without being recorded? What work repeatedly returns to the owner because it has no settled home?

This need not become a long exercise. Take one page and name the matters you do not want to lose in the change of month. Beside each, write the next action, the person responsible and a realistic date.

Some items will need follow-up. Others will need a conversation about cost or scope. A few may need to be stopped. The purpose is to replace a vague sense of unfinished business with decisions someone can act on.

There may also be work you have been postponing because it is useful but never urgent enough: organising records, catching up on bookkeeping or making customer follow-up more consistent. Its quietness does not make it unimportant. Delaying it can create the very urgency that keeps pushing it aside.

Ask what kind of support would help. A one-off effort to organise a backlog is different from a recurring responsibility that needs regular attention. Be clear about which problem you are trying to solve before choosing the arrangement.

At Sage, we provide practical bookkeeping, payroll, administrative and customer support for small and growing businesses. Tell us which part of the everyday work is becoming difficult to keep on top of, and we can discuss what support may fit.

You do not need to arrive with a polished explanation. Start with the task that keeps following you into another week.

Before November begins, give it a name and a next step.
